THE CONFETTI DIARIES // PART 1

Can we talk about confetti for just a moment? And our innate and unwavering love of it? We hand pick, hand mix and hand pack all our confetti here in our Melbourne studio. We spend extensive amounts of time discussing shades and tones, size and shape. We really do.

And so it is no surprise that confetti follows us where ever we go, tucked into our pockets, in our cars, scattered over our lounge room floors, floating through the studio carpark and always in the bottom of our handbags.  I found some in my parents bathroom last time I visited. They live 2 and half hours away from the Poppies studio. I'm not quite sure how it got there.  We seem to drop confetti like bread crumbs, always leading us into colour and joy. And it is in the simplicity of dots of colour, swirling through the air, that we find a moment of joy and goodness. What grace that is.

    THEY'RE BACK!

    THEY'RE BACK!

We have been waiting patiently (and a little bit not!) for our Honeycomb Balls to arrive - and they are finally here! 19 colours, 3 sizes and all the fun! Jump online to purchase.

    DIY CONFETTI CARD

    DIY CONFETTI CARD

    1. Using the paper tape, stick the design to the front of the card. No need to worry about getting it on there perfectly, this is DIY FUN, just use your eye.
    2. Use your art knife to cut the design into the card. No need to put the pressure on like an elephant, as once you’ve gone over each letter you can remove the taped on design & go over the cut lines again using your fancy knife. Just remember to carefully peel the paper tape off to avoid taring the card.
    3. Fill the pocket with confetti (make sure you don’t over fill as it will make the card too bulky, a couple of pinches gives a nice coverage).
    4. Seal the pocket & shake it in your hand to spread the confetti.
    5. Using the paper tape stick the pocket to the inside of the card.
    6. You may like to put the folded card under a few heavy books for an hour or so to help the fold work a treat.

Please note: These cards really are for your nearest & dearest. As they do take time, making 100 may be a slight over commitment.

    * for convince & delight you can purchase a DIY Christmas card pack from our website, which includes 6 plain cards, 6 kraft envelopes, 6 clear pockets, stencil downloads & mini joyful confetti. All you need to grab is an Art knife, paper tape & a cutting mat.

    SUMMER BERRY PARTY

    SUMMER BERRY PARTY

I'm sure you've all seen the awesome The House That Lars Built tutorial on making honeycomb fruit, we've added a step to be able to make tiny strawberries. Cute as a button. Hello summer parties!

    Honeycomb Strawberry:

    1. Cut out leaf shapes from the crepe. No need to be too particular in the shape.
    2. Cut out thin rectangles from the crepe. Fold & twist to make the stem.
    3. Cut the top & bottom off the honeycomb ball & cut some bulk from the side to make the berry thinner at the bottom & larger at the top.
    4. Fold the leaf and stick to one side of the honeycomb, flip & stick on one or two more leaves to the other side.
    5. Stick the stem down the centre of the ball.
    6. Fold open & secure with paper clip.

    Setting the table:

    1. To make a centrepiece, pile large, small & mini honeycomb balls, along with honeycomb fruit & some of your smaller strawberries. You may like to add jars of bright flowers
    2. Place a small coloured paper plate on top of a larger size in a different colour. Add in paper cups & straws & a yummy bottle of fizz next to each plate.
    3. Place the napkin on the plate & a home made paper strawberry on top. You may like to add a little tag to this to make a place setting. Fruity fun!

    2) ATTACH THE GOLD CURTAIN TO THE AREA YOU WANT TO DECORATE. WE USED A PHOTOGRAPHY STAND, BUT YOU MIGHT BE USING A BEAM IN YOUR HOUSE OR AT THE PARK, A CURTAIN RAIL OR FISHING LINE ATTACHED TO THE WALL USING HEAVY DUTY REMOVABLE HOOKS.

    3) FLING UP STREAMERS & FRINGED CREPE

    4) TIE ON HONEYCOMB BALLS, FANS, FANCY & LANTERNS AT VARYING HEIGHTS.

    5) FILL OUT WITH BALLOONS TIED ONTO STRING & RIBBON.

SOOOO EASY & SO MUCH FUN. THIS KIND OF SET UP LOOKS SUPER AS THE BACKDROP TO A DESSERT TABLE, IN A WINDOW, AS A PHOTO BOOTH BACKDROP, HUNG FROM A TREE, IN A ROTUNDA AT THE PARK, OFF THE SHOWER CURTAIN RAIL (IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE THROWING A BATH PARTY), AS A CAKE SMASH BACKDROP, JUST ADD IN THE BIG NUMBER 1 OR THE ONE BALLOON.

    Christmas Cheer

    Christmas Cheer

Is it obvious that we like celebrations? Gathering around a table & not being able to catch our breath from all the laughter is my favourite thing. I don't need fancy, nor does the table need to be immaculately decorated for the joy to come. It's always the people. But still, I can't help but bring all the colours too, make a little fairytale moment that shouts to the friend I'M SO GLAD YOU CAME. They probably knew that anyway, but my hands make, so I go with it. Christmas is coming, which means the Christmas table is coming, YAY. All the sticky tape is getting ready to come home, and oh boy am I going to spend the whole roll! Here is an odd little collection of our things that will most likely be a part of my Christmas celebrating. We even have a little DIY goodness to share with you, Confetti Christmas cards & our favourite ways to wrap. You can check out the christmas range through our store DIY's are coming soon.

    BALLOON POP MAKING 101

    BALLOON POP MAKING 101

    1) GATHER YOUR INGREDIENTS- A PACK OF BALLOON POPS & A BALLOON PUMP.

    2) INFLATE THE BALLOONS USING THE PUMP, YOU CAN RELEASE AIR AS YOU MOVE YOUR FINGERS UP THE BASE OF THE BALLOON TO MAKE A CIRCULAR SHAPE. IT'S IMPORTANT TO USE THE PUMP AS THIS SIZE OF BALLOON IS DIFFICULT TO INFLATE USING YOUR MOUTH & THE WARMTH OF YOUR BREATH WILL FOG THE CLEAR BALLOON.

    3) RUB EACH BALLOON WITH YOUR HAND TO CREATE STATIC, ROLL THE BALLOON AROUND & THE CONFETTI WILL STATIC TO THE SIDES OF THE BALLOON.

    4) TIE THE INCLUDED CORD TO THE BASE OF THE BALLOON & TRIM TO LENGTH.

    5) THREAD THE CORD THROUGH THE PAPER STRAW & TUG ON THE CORD TO WEDGE THE BALLOON INTO PLACE.

    6) CUT A LENGTH OF RIBBON & TIE IN PLACE.

TA DA. YOU JUST MADE SOME PRETTY EXCEPTIONAL BALLOON POPS. WHY NOT ADD ONE TO A WRAPPED GIFT, POP THEM IN WITH FLOWERS OR FILL A JAR...SO MANY POPTASTIC OPTIONS, JUST TO GET YOU STARTED!

    ARTWORK

    ARTWORK

WHEN I WAS YOUNG WE LIVED WITH MY NANA FOR A SEASON & EVERY AFTERNOON WE'D PAINT AND MAKE MANSIONS FROM TOILET ROLLS & STICKY TAPE. SHE DROPPED A SEED INTO MY HEART & MY LOVE OF COLOUR & PLAY STARTED TAKING ROOT. TODAY I CLING TO MONET'S WORDS AS I FLING MY ARTWORK INTO THE WORLD:
"Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love."
AHH, EXHALE, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND. WHICH MEANS IT'S NOT NECESSARY TO EXPLAIN. WHICH MEANS NOTHING NEEDS TO BE WEIGHED & MEASURED. I CAN STAND HERE QUIETLY, WHAT SWEET RELIEF.

FOR YEARS I HAVE PAINTED FOR FRIENDS & NOT SIGNED MY WORK, BECAUSE I HAD WHISPERED THE UGLY WORD 'FRAUD' OVER WHAT I WAS DOING. DON'T DO THAT, ITS A SHAMING WORD & IT SUCKS THE JOY OUT OF THE PROCESS.

THIS TIME THE PAINT & THE STREAMERS BECAME MY SANDBOX & INSTEAD OF FRAUD, I THOUGHT PLAY PLAY PLAY.

THE COLLECTION GOES LIVE AT 9PM TONIGHT. A GROUP OF SEVENTEEN PIECES. BECAUSE ONE TUNRED INTO TWO, TURNED INTO.....

    The Start of Things

Lucas started school in 2015. I really wanted him to know that as a family, character was the most important thing we are all learning. To be a good friend. To be a kind human. So we got out a sharpie & wrote out why prep would go well for him. We wrote 'I will rock prep because I am kind and brave and full of light'. Learning new things takes guts. We will always celebrate guts!
